'Game Of Thrones' Fans, You Might Wanna Stay Off The Internet, 'Cos HBO Just Got Hacked
If 2017 had to be the year of the cyber attack, HBO might have hoped that their time would come after the current season of Game Of Thrones was done. No such luck, though — with over half of Season 7 still to air, some sad hacker has decided to target the channel, stealing 1.5 terabytes of their data, presumably just to ruin Thrones for the 10 million+ people who watch it religiously.
The company announced Monday afternoon that they had "recently experienced a cyber incident." Here's the statement in full:
"HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information. We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold."
What's actually contained within the leak isn't yet known, although the hackers have released upcoming episodes of Ballers and Room 104 — so far, nothing from shows people actually watch. Chances are Game Of Thrones isn't too far off, though, unless HBO had it locked down with the wildfire in the King's Landing dungeons. The hackers are claiming they have the goodies from Westeros.
HBO chairman Richard Plepler said specialists were working round the clock to "protect HBO's interests," and given how serious shit is getting in Season 7 of Game Of Thrones, it would be a major shame and a complete disaster if huge spoilers or even complete episodes were leaked online. The hackers described their handiwork as "the greatest leak of the cyber-space era." Their mothers must be very proud.
We'll have more on exactly what the Game of Thrones leak includes as the story continues to break, but I think it's safe to say that anybody serious about avoiding spoilers should probably give Reddit a wide berth. Or, like, the whole internet.
